Following extensive field testing, MOA Targets has established guidelines for use of 1/4" AR400 as a long range rifle target. Impact velocity must be below 2500 fps, and impact energy below 1000 ft/lbs. For most 5.56x45mm loads, this is at 300 yards. For 7.62x51mm, total energy does not drop below 1000 ft/lbs until 500 or more yards. Check your ballistics chart for your load before setting your minimum distance. Minimum distances suggested by MOA are just that, suggested. The important part is the impact velocity (to reduce pitting and prevent blow through) and impact energy (to prevent denting).
